Mae West was the first sex symbol in films. After her highly noticeable debuts on the stage in vaudeville ? in which she emphasised her pronounced taste for provocation and lusty humour, as in her own play called Sex, which cost her eight days in jail ? she went on to conquer Hollywood. One scandal after another merely increased her popularity, and it encouraged her to bend the rules of morality and decency even more. But apart from her fight with the censors, Hollywood still remembers the actress for her joie de vivre, her disobedience, her strange beauty and, above all, her contribution to the sexual emancipation of women.
